Advertising in "Your Times" is an asset to our business. Anthony Hoy's publication is an honest account of life in the Southern Highlands. It is a great read, true to all tastes, and does not cater to a specific market. It is diverse in content, and home grown .....

Since advertising in "Your Times" our waiting list has doubled!

YourTimes Is Great

Posted by Anonymous User at Friday 03 August 2007

YouTimes is the best newspaper I have ever come across. It has uncovered numerous mistakes on the behalf of the Wingecaribee Shire Coucil which have so far been kept silent by all the other newspapers. Well done to all those dedicated writers, freelancers and volunteers who have contributed to this truthful and note-worthy newspaper!

Keep up the good work.

I am looking forward to your article on mental health services in this area. I have been told it will be a beauty.

Mental Health Meltdown

Posted by Anonymous User at Tuesday 02 December 2008

Thanks YourTimes for a MUCH overdue article. I hope your article may lead to the beginnings of some change in the local mental health service.

What Mental Health Meltdown?

Posted by Welshie at Wednesday 07 January 2009

What a disappointing article! One (obviously disgruntled) informant who appears to have had an axe to grind, and two general practitioners who seem to have very little knowledge of the current mental health services in the Southern Highlands - and that out of about 60 GPs now in the area. So much for a meltdown.

Personally, I did not see the "reputation for integrity and mature journalism in its news and features" in this issue of Your Times.

Nor did I see evidence of the "commitment by the independent private publisher Narage P/L to champion the public's right to high quality information, analysis and debate".

Where was the high quality information, the analytical content or the opportunity for debate in this article by Megan Bird?

Even worse, when this writer responded (taking a differing viewpoint) at the invitation of the author of the article I did so on the basis of the statement made that all responses "would be treated confidentially". Imagine my surprise when the informant (Paul) used by Megan Bird for her article was given access to my email address and then commenced sending me a barrage of threatening and insulting emails "so much for confidentiality" as determined by Ms Bird.

Perhaps if people want to get a more accurate and comprehensive view of the Bowral Mental Health Service than the one given in the December issue of Your Times they should access the site: mentalhealthbloominginbowral.blogspot.com.

the whole story

Posted by Anonymous User at Sunday 25 January 2009

Regarding previous letter re Bowral Mental Health.

I wonder how many people are aware that people like doctors, psychiatrists and public servants in Sydney who are in different ways responsible for what happens at Bowral Mental Health are concerned and investigating allegations and statements made in Yourtimes article and OTHER allegations.

To claim or even hint this is mainly about two GPs, and one journalist who mainly used one informant with mental illness and so on is a complete insult to your readers.

Rebuttal to Paul C

Posted by Joe Blake at Wednesday 28 January 2009

Since the "Anonymous" who reacts so positively to the Mental Health Meltdown in the Southern Highlands story is the same "Paul" who is the primary informant to the journalist of the "Your Times" article I'm not surprised at his defence of the magazine. The reality is that it is poorly written, the journalist has been unethical to a point that their morals and professional ethics are questionable. As for the "investigations" being carried out by senior people in the health service.....well why wouldn't they? That's what the Health Department and the HCCC expect whenever any person makes a complaint (even dubious ones). We are always told that the Department and its health services want transparency in their investigations and dealings. The fact of the matter is that Paul C is pre-judging the results of the investigations whilst most would be prepared to wait for the outcome he and his journalist friend have already condemned an excellent service that manages to provide a great service in difficult times. Let's wait and see what any investigation brings before condemning anyone or anything about this service.

I support Joe Blake

Posted by Martha O'Springer at Sunday 15 February 2009

Joe Blake says it like it is (in his own mind). Some may say he is petty, spiteful, and completely intolerant of criticism, but I think the anonymous courage he shows in defending an institution with which he has no connection whatsoever is, well, just fabulous. We love you Ke-, er, Joe. Keep up the good fight for Bo-, I mean, any mental health service in general. Not that you're involved in any way. By the way, I went to school with your father, Vladimir, and my husband, Arthur, says that you were always very appreciative about the electrical fittings he did that time when... well, just wanted to say that you have all the support in the world from other anonymous make-believe people in the Southern Highlands, especially poodle owners.

My main problem

Posted by Paul Kirton at Sunday 15 February 2009

My main, but not only, problem with the local mental health service is the following:

Since 1982 when I first went to a psych hospital and had ECT (electro convulsive therapy) I have had a number of really top PSYCHIATRISTS in Sydney tell me I have mental illness; a serious mood disorder; bi-polar and/or schizo-affective disorder. Since 1994, I have had two private PSYCHIATRISTS in the Southern Highlands agree with the Sydney doctors. Yet, on and off since 1994, but especially since about 2001, I have had contact with a mental health service (Bowral) that often disputes the above and has claimed, for example, my main problem is a BPD (Borderline personality disorder). The help, support, supervision and treatment a person with BPD receives is going to be different to what a person with bi-polar disorder or schizophrenia receives.

There have been a number of times from the 90s to recent times when I was having an "episode" and was quite unwell but did not (in the opinion of myself, my family and my doctor and others) receive the help and support from the local mental health service (Bowral) that I should have received. A Bowral psychiatrist has written to both the Health Minister and the local court magistrate about this in the past.

One person's opinion

Posted by Anonymous User at Sunday 22 February 2009

I agree 100% with those who have been critical of the Yourtimes article on the local mental health service. Any HONEST person knows it was basically all about an unhappy client, one journalist who listened to him and a couple of doctors (plus maybe a few others) who went along for the ride. YourTimes lift your game !

Confusing isn't it!

Posted by Joe Blake at Thursday 26 February 2009

Just so that people who bother to read these reviews can keep up with the weirdness that one person is determined to inflict upon us all....perhaps it needs to be said that the following has taken place, prior to, and since Megan Bird's article "Mental Health Meltdown" appeared in the December 08 issue of YourTimes.

The review "Mental Health" posted on 2nd December by Anonymous User, which was meant to advise us of the article was posted by none other than the 'Paul' referred to in the article by Megan Bird.

The review "Mental Health Meltdown" also posted on 2nd December by Anonymous User (again posted by 'Paul' of the article) was a thank you for "a MUCH overdue article". Odd timing really as the issue of YourTimes was not available until December 3rd or later.

Then there was a review "What Mental Health Meltdown" posted on 7th January 2009 by a person named as "Welshie" in which certain criticisms of the Megan Bird article were made. What was revealing was the statement by "Welshie" that Megan Bird had appeared to have given his/her email address to the 'Paul' named in her article and this apparently brought on a flood of threatening emails to the person known as "Welshie".

Then on 25 January 2009 in his response called The Whole Story, 'Paul' the Anonymous User simply recounted the information he'd provided to Megan Bird for her article.

On 28 January 2009 I used my name 'Joe Blake' to provide the post "Rebuttal to Paul C" in which I challenged his views, and therefore the views of Megan Bird. I indicated my support for any investigation which would identify if there was any truth in the allegations made by 'Paul' or Megan Bird. I simply asked for due process to be followed.

Then in a review posting titled "I support Joe Blake" on 15 February 2009, we have a person named 'Martha O'Springer' purporting to support me. However, simply reading that bit of nonsense tells one that it is the work of none other 'Paul' or 'Paul C' or as he has subsequently revealed himself 'Paul Kirton'.

The review posting by 'Paul Kirton' also on the 15 February 2009 is probably the first bit of honest comment he has made to date. So let us wait (as I have stated earlier) for the results of the investigation rather than prejudge them. I have confidence that the health service will be more fair and factual than "Paul', 'Paul C' or Megan Bird of YourTimes could ever be.

In one final review posting on 22 February by 'Paul', 'Paul C', 'Martha O'Springer', introduces his new nom de plume of 'Joseph B. Welsh' on his review titled "One person's opinion". It does not take much to see his combination use of 'Welshie and 'Joe Blake' to spot this one. However, I have to agree with the final statement by 'Paul C' et al: "YourTimes lift your game!"

not my style

Posted by Paul Kirton at Tuesday 03 March 2009

I simply could not have written all here that Joe Blake claims I have written. For example, I am simply not capable of the style and humour that put the "O'Springer" letter together; I wish I was.

To think all "this" here and else where started because one journalist decided to write one article critical of one mental health service and she found a dozen people or more to assist her.

The way a tiny handful of people have reacted to one article in YourTimes says a lot in my opinion. Also, there are clearly many employed at Bowral Mental Health Service who have behaved and reacted in a far more sensible manner.

Paul Kirton

I am not Martha !

Posted by Paul Kirton at Saturday 07 March 2009

Joe Blake,

I can assure you 100% that I am not "Martha O'Springer" and I did not write her letter. You seem so sure of everything here, Joe. Have you ever heard of that Latin tag/saying "false in one thing, false in everything." ?

Paul Kirton

Let's be honest

Posted by Paul Kirton at Monday 09 March 2009

I have identified myself as Paul Kirton, my real name; the Paul Kirton who suffers from a mental illness and the same "Paul" who appeared in the YourTimes article.

I doubt "Welshie" or "Joe Blake" would be brave enough or honest enough to use their real names or make known their real connections to Bowral Mental Health service.

Also, regarding the making of threats; it was "Welshie" who made the first threat on my web log, whatwouldericblairdo.blogspot.com, back in October last year when he said to me it could be "your head that ends up in a basket" when this business re BMHS is over.

Also, there are things "Joe Blake" claims that are simply untrue. I did not write that "Martha O'Springer" letter. It is not my style or humour. I am not capable of writing something like that.

Finally, I challenge "Welshie" and "Joe Blake" to drop the anonymity even a little so other people may have some idea why they have REALLY taken the stance and position they have here and else where.

Some good news

Posted by Paul Kirton at Thursday 12 March 2009

I have some good news! Two people, fairly high in Area Health, have assured me that from NOW on I can (finally!) take it or assume that any help, support or treatment etc I may receive from Bowral Mental Health Service will be on the basis that I DO suffer from a severe mood disorder; a serious mental illness and not some sort of personality disorder.

So for me at least, something good and important did come out of the whole YourTimes article et al business.

Thank you Megan Bird and YourTimes!

Martha O'Springer still supports Joe Blake

Posted by Martha O'Springer at Friday 13 March 2009

This is soooooooo confusing. Who are these people that can't find it in themselves to support the good work done by the tireless hero Joe Blake (known to his [only] friend as "welshie")?

Joey, we love you and we read your very informative Internets writings very diligently. As part of the sister city relationship Bowral has with Pyongyang, Nth. Korea, the Wingecarribee Mental Health Service study group regularly corresponds with the "Dear Leader Re-Education and Citizen Electrification Unit (Pyongyang Heights ward)", and your webloggery is often the main focus of our insightful forays into mental health servicing. You rock Joe!

I don't care who it is, whoever cannot see the goodwill and niceness that you inject into your work and the untold hours you've spent monitoring any anti-social attacks thereon, I just think they're wrong. Keep it up, Blakey.

from Mr O'Springer

Posted by Arthur O'Springer at Sunday 22 March 2009

Dear Your Times,

My wife, Martha O'Springer, is a great local mental health service success story, in my opinion; had Your Times chosen to speak to either of us first (instead of that "informant" Paul K) your article could only have bloomed into a more interesting and informative piece.

Yours,

Mr Arthur K. O'Springer.

Who would have thought

Posted by Anonymous User at Saturday 04 April 2009

Who would have thought it possible that a male psych nurse could have used anonymity/fake identity to attack one of his own clients? What a breach of the nurses' code of conduct!

Oh well, truth IS stranger than fiction. I wonder if this could be an end of a career or will it be just a "slap on the wrist"? As the authorities have said to me and others, we must have confidence appropriate action will be taken.
