Chevalier College

Chevalier College

Chevalier is a Catholic secondary college conducted by the priests and brothers of the international religious order, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (M.S.C.). The M.S.C. were founded in France in 1854 by Father Jules Chevalier, and were first established in Australia in 1885.

Chevalier began in 1946 with an enrolment of 46 boys. Co-education came about in 1978 through amalgamation with Elm Court, Moss Vale, a girls school conducted by the Dominican Order since 1891. It is now a fully co-educational high school, with a total enrolment of approximately 1,100.

The College is ideally situated on a beautiful 100 acres property in Bowral in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales.

The College's motto is "Fortes in Fide" - "Strong in Faith", and its symbol - the knight - comes from the translation from the French of the school's name.

I have attended Chev for more than 2 years now and it's a great school! Amazing grounds, dedicated teachers, friendly peers and a strong school spirit. Take every opportunity given to you! You will regret it if you don't.

It really was an amazing place to grow up ( and perhaps unwittingly) to learn. The scope of extra=curricular activities and the opportunity to experience a breadth of pursuits, from plays, cross-country skiing, abseilling or learning music in specially built peace. and SO MUCH SPORT. I have not seen the like in any other school since, though I took it all for granted at the time, perhaps distracted by the idiocy of the boarders and their perpetual boy noise.

I have children and am now myself searching for schools...but realise I have been largely 'ruined' and want for them what I experienced and loved. However, I now live far away, and cannot find it's equal. Good, yes. Expensive and prestigious even, but with a curriculum that makes me weep for the future and not a student - operated climbing harness or balcony- dangling fourteen year old in sight.

So Thankyou (most belatedly) to all who helped, shared or even hindered my puberty amidst those (lovely green)grounds.

And to Mr Alexander and Mr Deveson most especially (one for being the best teacher I ever had and the other for persisting in the assumption that I was far more perfect, deserving or angelic than my actual behaviour ever supported. xxxxx

I hope as an institution, and as a community 'you' remain as you were, so very very much fun most of all.

I'm a past student. '72-'75. I've been browsing and surfing and see a couple of familiar names, Denis Strangman (FR?) and Fr Terry Herbert. Other names I remember are Mr Shergold (Math), MR Chambers(English) and Mr Doyle (Woodwork). I have no doubt that the college and the fine teachers (although I didn't think so at the time) gave me the life skills to get me where I am today. After 24 years in the RAAF I look back fondly on those years at Chev with thanks.

Literacy skills

I was amazed when reading the above comments from past and present students, but maybe grammar, pronunciation and spelling may not have been high on the teaching priority list.

I know it is in the Public School system.

So WorthWhile!

Chevalier College is a wonderful school full of love and kindness. I have been at the school for a while now and am absolutely loving it. Chevalier College is like a big family, where everyone is welcome. It offers an excellent amount of subjects for the student to engage in from agriculture studies to french and food technology.

It also offers excellent academic oppurtunities, allowing the student to achieve amazing results! I could never imagine going to another school as I love Chevalier College with all my heart!

A treasured experience. Focused my moral future. Exposed my weaknesses. Found my strengths. Opportunities that others were not able to subscribe. Snow, flies and rock solid friendships.

Catching up and Keeping Contact

Hello all current and past Chevalier students (and staff!).

I run a webpage for past and present students and staff here at http://chev.tk. We keep photos and posts all about events and reunions and much much more.

Chevalier was an awesome experience for me and I boarded there for 6 years from 1998 to 2003. I'll never forget that school, my friends or the awesome staff there (especially at the music department). Chev gave me such an experience that I continue to explore the music that I was taught there. These days I even run my own stage band at uni in Sydney called "Knot on Right" which you can visit here: http://musocunsw.org/StageBand.php

Endless fun, great people. I wouldn't have bothered making a page for it otherwise,

Ex Student

Posted by Crystal Walters at Tuesday 24 July 2007

Id like to say as an ex student that i learnt far more from the two years at chev than any time i had spent at any other school. I found myself after leaving chev being taught things i had already learnt and the substantial all round in general knowledge was much lower at the new school. If my family circumstances were different i could have gone far at your school. My brother was not as easy with school work but at chev he finished year 10 and with the help of a teacher(Mrs Santos) got a butchers apprenticship and has agreat career from it.

so thankyou
