Twice Bitten Never Again

Posted by Angus at Sunday 02 October 2011

One of the joys of a wet long weekend in the highlands is the opportunity to catch up with friends over a late breakfast on a Sunday morning - our friends chose the venue and we met at 11am. We placed orders for coffee and were given menus but told that breakfast was no longer available and nor was lunch - not until 12 o"clock - we were welcome to cake in the meantime. Dreams of the big breakfast vanished!

Resigned to our fate we ordered cake.....then ....nothing. Finally tepid coffees arrived 30 minutes later. Cake followed ANOTHER 30 minutes later again...by which time we could have ordered from the lunch menu. As we started on our cake the very recent arrivals next to us were being served lunch.....

Around the table we realised that a number of us had similar experience in the past and agreed that never again ... leisurely Sunday mornings are too precious!!!!

don't waste your time

I have been to this cafe before and sworn never to go again, bad service and tasteless food, however when a friend suggested we go there for breakfast, I thought she must know something I don't and thought to give it another go. We arrived for brunch at 11am, exactly the wrong time, breakfast finishes at 11 and lunch begins at 12.00. As two in our party were on a tight schedule for the airport, we opted to have coffee and cake rather than to wait for lunch at 12.00. We waited and waited, finally when the table next door were served lunch items, we were served our coffee which was cold and watery, and brought out so that the last person received their cup well after the other three. The cakes when they finally came were overly sweet and not satisfying. The owner was brusque and repeated several times that they needed time to change from breakfast to lunch, fair enough, but incredibly badly managed. This cafe is not recommended, don't waste your time.

Kids and parents loved it!

Unlike previous reviewers my family had a very positive experience. There were no other children when we entered, but my 11 yo daughter and 8 yo son were handed elephant-related books to read as soon as we sat down. Service was prompt and attentive, and the food (beef korma, pea and ham soup, chicken schnitzel burger and spiced lamb burger) was tasty and delicious. I wished we had a cafe like this in Melbourne!

Don't eat in this cafe if you have babies/children

After stopping at this cafe with my mother and sister for breakfast and cake and coffee twice on our way down south, we had okay experiences.. however, after frequenting this cafe once I had my five month old son with us, this was our experience -

We found our own way to the sofa area, settled my well behaved son on his slozzie on the ground out of the way of waitresses and people then all of a sudden, the owner who I believe is known by the name "Claudia" abruptly swooped on us and said "this is not a domestic environment and there may be shards of glass on the floor" looking down on us, no "hello how are you today". My mother and I were surprised at her cold manner and rudeness, we assured her that my son is not yet rolling let a lone crawling however she continued to repeat herself "not a domestic environment, things may get spilt, shards of glass may be on the floor"..we were not made to feel welcome at all. There was no friendly conversation or interest in what we had planned for the day. We were served, however we seemed to be an inconvenience even though we were quieter than the other customers. Coffee was okay, glasses of water not great as they were basically thrown at us, moroccan lamb patty was almost raw and pumpkin pie quite tasteless. We were not asked how was anything and I would have said something to the owner when making payment however she was no where to be seen. We will not be visiting this cafe again and I highly recommend you don't if you have babies or children. We have already seen other nice looking cafes in the sun on a side street which will receive our business next time we are passing through.

3rd visit from B & D 11 June 2011

Posted by Barbara at Sunday 12 June 2011

After having 2 good experiences eating at the Elephant Boy Cafe, we recommended it as the place to go however, our last visit on Saturday, we found the service was appalling, the coffee was cold, the waitress did not listen and were not pleasant at all. When our orders were incorrect we received no apologies, instead we were shown annoyance. At no point were we asked if everything was alright. The people running this cafe have a lot to learn about customer service and satisfaction. We will be trying somewhere else in the future. Very disappointing.

Won't be returning

Well we had received a recommendation to visit this place and I have to say that the atmosphere is very nice with scattered tables amongst the books and novelties. What left me with a sour taste was the service and food and coffee (in that order)

It seems that everyone had an attitude issue from the Boss (female) the you girl and even to a lesser degree the elderly man when having to replace one of our four beverages. (we should really have sent the others back as they were not at all hot)

Really! If I ask for cake without cream then I do expect to get it.

The sour responses to our initial questions and subsequent requests are what appalled me the most in a time of so much competition in the hospitality industry.

There are many more places in Bowral to try and that is what I will be doing next time . YOU GUYS ARE MISSING THE PLOT

Service was so bad, we walked out.

Sunday 27 Mar- 2011: Walked into this cramped, busy Bowral restaurant and should have taken heed at the lack of children in the place.

The waitress was seemingly not coping well so we found and sat down at the only clear table that would accommodate my wife, daughter and myself. After reviewing the scant menu of light, easy to prepare meals, we settled on a selection that was to cost around $60+ and waited for the flustered older waitress to take our order.

Oh, noticed the note on the menu that the food will be ready when it is ready. I then understood that we were there for them, they were not there to serve us our meal and be paid for a pleasant dining experience.

This woman who ignored us at the door, walked past us at our "self-found" table and I smile at her to give her the indication that we were ready to order. She looked at me though her "bug-eyed" glasses smirked back at me.

After 5 mins smirky waitress returns stating that we must surrender the table because is is reserved for another woman so we can go over to the couch and wait. When we stated that there was no reserved sign on the table, flustered waitress snootily replied that she does not reserve tables.

So we got up. Snooty waitress quickly returns and plonks a 'Reserved' sign on the table glancing at me with a look of disdain and contempt.

So we walked out vowing to never return to the hypocritical cafe nazi.

My advice? Never, ever dine here!

Wish we had one in England

I work for British Airways out of heathrow. My sister and her husband live in Australia, so after reading a fabulous review of the Elephant Boy cafe in our inflight magazine I decided to pay them a visit the next time I was there with my husband. We do have friends that live in Bowral and they spoke very highly of the place and said that they are regulars. What a find this place is. We went their for breakfast and returned for a late lunch. I travel all over because of my job and must say that the biggy breakfast my husband had in his words "was the best he had had anywhere, as was my creamy porridge. For lunch I had the fish crumple pie and my husband had the poachers rabbit pie. The cafe was very busy both for breakfast and lunch and although there was a bit of a wait, and that could only been expected, the food was well worth waiting for. The menu and the decor has obviously has been put together by one well travelled with a lot of class.

Appalling Service And Attitude

I said I'd never return to this cafe after a few months ago the owner laid into my 4 year old daughter when she touched a shiney model boat left right at kid height next to some armchairs.

Yesterday I gave it another try. We were a little pushed for time as it was a birthday treat breakfast out before school. First the waitress wouldn't give me a menu at the counter, insisting that we take a seat and wait 10 minutes before she would bring us one. We ordered sausages, eggs and toast for two small children, eggs florentine for myself and small apple juices for the kids. 30 minutes later when it arrived the apple juices were enormous and the sausage and eggs were adult portions (so more than half was left by children who just can't eat or drink anywhere that much), the eggs florentine were served stone cold in utterly tasteless hollandaise, the muffin was burnt and the smoked salmon was still crunchy with frosting. We had to cram it all down at break neck speed in order to get the kids to school in time and were charged almost $70. I would have complained about the eggs florentine and un-neccesary childrens potions and the over-pricing but the service was so slow we didn't have time.

I would also have complained about the service but there was a note on the menu informing customers their food would be ready when it was ready.

It's nice that the walls are lined with books but this has to be the worst service and food in the Southern Highlands.

Good food. Poor service

A weekend at Elephant Boy

Posted by Amie at Monday 21 May 2007

I was in Bowral this past weekend and found this gorgeous cafe on Saturday, where we stopped in and had cake and coffee. All I could think about for the rest of the night was the decadence of the White Chocolate Cake I had and so on Sunday we were back there for elevenses (coffee and cake at 11am). Before we knew it, it was 1pm and we were ordering the best gourmet pie I have ever had. A few hours later we left feeling well fed with another slice of cake in hand for the drive home.

Service was attentive and very friendly on both visits, I strongly recommend it - I think I would just go back for the cake alone!
