Disorganised and dear
Posted by Ron Barratt at Friday 26 August 2011
My wife and I stopped off in Berrima for a mid-morning, mid-week coffee before lunch in Bowral. We spotted the Magpie Cafe, a pleasant looking cafe with white table cloths on the outside tables and went inside to inquire whether there was table service on those tables. A woman in a black beret assured me there was so while I was standing at the table I decided to order tghe coffees there. She wrote the order down and we went outside in the sun and waited. When they didn't arrive after 10, maybe 15, minutes my wife went inside and asked how the coffees were coming along. The lady in the black beret asked who we placed the order with and blamed her husband's hearing problem. The coffee duly arrived. We had allowed about 40 minutes for the coffee stop and drive back to Bowral. We didn't have time to linger over the coffee and when we finished I went inside to pay. The lady in the beret asked me what I wanted. There had been less than half a dozen customers during our stay so I was somewhat surprised she had forgotten me so quickly. I explained I wanted to pay and she asked what I had. When I said two coffees she snapped out "Nine-ninety". I continued by saying: "one latte and one double-shot." Quick as a flash she said: "Double-shot. Ten-ninety." By then we were running out of time for our lunch appointment. So I paid and left. Then I started to think: "Two coffees, $10.90?" I would have thought we were more entitled to a discount after having to order twice and endure a long wait. Very expensive coffee by anyone's standards and poor and disorganised service.
I agree with "Slow Food"

We booked a group of fourteen for breakfast at the Magpie Cafe. It took easily an hour for the meals to arrive and even then still in dribs and drabs. Four of us ordered bacon and fried eggs only to be served poached eggs. The meals were taken away. Two were returned with the correct eggs and cold everything else. We complained and were told they would cook another meal. As we had another engagement we could not wait perhaps another hour to be served so we left. Yes, the place was busy but it is still no excuse, especially when table who arrived after us were served before us.
Slow food

My family was also at the Magpie Cafe on 16th May, stopping for brunch on our way through the southern highlands. We would have eaten sooner had we continued another 90 minutes home and cooked it ourselves. We had ordered hotcakes x2, scrambled eggs with bacon and a pastry from the cabinet, nothing difficult or time consuming to prepare. After well over 45 minutes, we were noting other tables who had arrived before us and were still waiting for their orders. As the previous reviewer commented the waiting staff were clearly not coping, looking lost and untrained. But the real issue appeared to be what ever was happening or rather not happening in the kitchen. Eventually the two plates of hotcakes arrived. One had a piece of baking paper in it, the other was burnt and had a stray raw mushroom stuck to the honey-ricotta. The other food did not arrive then and still hadn't another 10 minutes after the hotcakes were finished. We cut our loses and left, with one very hungry teenager, pitying those who were arriving for lunch. If pancakes and scrambled eggs couldn't be served in an hour, how would they cope with actual meals. Even the most basic order, a pastry from the cabinet which simply needed a plate, was stuffed up. It also appalled me that while the staff were completely overwhelmed, they were still sitting people walking in off the street with no explanation of an expected wait, or consideration of those customers who had booked. Indeed there was no apology for the appalling service. Hard to imagine how such a poorly run cafe could continue.
Appalling service

Had lunch today with family members for a birthday. While the food was nice and well-presented, the service was absolutely appalling and downright embarrassing. The staff were completely clueless and untrained. No one took our order for ages, they didn't offer us water without asking, no soup spoons, wrong orders, missing dishes, not clearing the table, not offering coffee, and so on. While they claimed to be understaffed, the lack of attention to the customers by the front-of-house was breathtaking. I will be complaining to the management, and I don't recommend this place to anyone. With service like this they deserve to fail.

Ate at Magpie Cafe twice now and it is nothing but awesome! Had the steak sandwich first time, best one I've ever had. Second time, had the salmon which was very tasty.

MY FAMILY LOVES GOING TO THE MAGPIE CAFE. TREVOR, WHO OWNS THE CAFE, IS A WONDERFUL HOST AND LOOKS AFTER US. THE FOOD IS DELICIOUS AND I USUALLY HAVE SPAGHETTI WITH CHEESE. FROM LUCY 5.11.09

I have attended the Magpie Cafe on three occasions. Two of these were during the week - one breakfast and one lunch. The service was slow but the food was tasty if a little pricey for what you get. The third occasion was a Sunday lunch. The cafe was crowded and the waiting staff were clearly out of their depth. Unless we attracted the attention of the waitress, we were ignored. We ordered two mineral waters and a glass of tap water, and our meals. The mineral waters came about 15 minutes after order and the tap water did not arrive at all despite a number of requests. After one hour, we were forced to flag down a waitress to enquire about our food. We were told that it was just being made. We waited another 15 minutes. No sign of food, so we cancelled our order and left. While we understand there may be a delay in busy times, to wait for over one hour for a bowl of soup is ridiculous. A simple forewarning from the staff when we entered the Cafe to advise us that due to the crowd, there is; for example, 30 minute wait on orders, would have been a courtesy. Unfortunately, politeness is not something the owners and staff of this establishment seem to care about. My advice to Magpie Cafe is: 1) polite staff are essential for a business such as this, 2) either reduce the number of tables you have or increase your kitchen staff on busy weekends.
We were left very hungry and very disappointed.
Absolute rip-off

Two of us had a soft drink each, a main course each and shared a serve of bread. Total cost: 99 dollars. We found the food was pretty ordinary. Will never go there again although we live locally.
Fabulous coffee and slice

Had lunch with a girlfriend recently and finished off a tasty but light meal with a heartwarming coffee and a delightful slice of date and walnut slice. Would love the recipe of the slice, as my family would relish it as I did, any chance of the chef parting with the recipe.
I live in hope.
unfortunate ending

great menu and surrounds, but unfortunately when I notified staff of a dead fly in my salad, they neither apologised nor offered any recompence!
Delicous and Magnificant!

We had the rack of lamb and the steak and both were heavenly delicious! The most amazing food, fantastic service and most wonderful atmosphere, nothing compared for the rest of the weekend!

This place is amazing, not only do they create a relaxing ambience, they are likely to remember your name. They have a great sense of customer service and will treat you.
The food is amazing, its wholesome but the flavours are really satisfying and elaborate. If you are driving from Canberra to Sydney any time soon, take the time and stop off for a dinner you are unlikely to forget.
