A Miracle in Burrawang

A Miracle in Burrawang

John Shortis and Moyer Simpson join forces with Peter J Casey and director Carissa Campbell for a brand new Christmas show comprising comedy, cabaret and Christmas songs.

When the staff at Alexander Downer’s office heard the interview with John Shortis and Moyer Simpson on Canberra’s ABC 666 radio today,  they were on the phone in an instant.  It seems Alexander Downer has the honour of introducing recent newlyweds Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman.  Song writer John Shortis couldn’t resist this opportunity and in his song Find Me a Man Like Keith which you can hear in A Miracle in Burrawang Moya Simpson appeals to Mr Downer to find her a man like Keith.   The song delighted Mr Downer’s office staff and they have put an order for a copy. This is just one of the comedy, cabaret and Christmas songs that collide as Shortis and Simpson join forces with Peter J Casey and director Carissa Campbell for a brand new Christmas show.  No strangers to the cabaret stage these three perform to sell out houses in Canberra and are heading North for Christmas.

Isobel Griffin is promoting this production to signal the beginning of what she sees will be a new and exciting episode for the arts in The Southern Highlands.  It has become a passion for her to provide opportunities for performers to work with new audiences outside the ACT and Sydney and at the same time offer new works for local audiences to enjoy.   She met Shortis, Simpson and Casey at The Street Theatre in Canberra where she has worked for the last 4 years

John Shortis writes songs and scripts, plays keyboard, and spends hours reading newspapers and delving into libraries and archives.  Moya Simpson sings, mimics accents, plays characters, and has a passion for Eastern European music.  Their combined skills make up Shortis and Simpson, producers, writers and performers of productions and projects that are always surprising, original, innovative and wide in their range of styles and genres.  Based in Canberra, they specialise in shows that reflect Australian history and politics in a way that is funny, satirical and informative, with the odd gut wrenching moment. Peter J Casey began his Cabaret career in 1999 at the School of Arts Café with his first show Closes on Saturday Night, seven minutes of which won the Sydney Cabaret Convention. His solo shows have now been performed at the New York Cabaret Convention, Sydney Opera House, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, the Speigeltent at the Queensland Festival of Music and Melbourne’s Butterfly Club. In1997, he arranged and conducted The Bard Sings Broadway for the first Shakespeare Festival of Australia, and he works as a pianist on ABC -TV’s Play School. Peter has accompanied David Campbell, Toni Lamond, John O’ May, Jeanne Little, Mark Fuller, Jackie Rae, June Bronhill, Rachel Berger and many others.
