Mittagong History Local Government 2

The history of local government in Mittagong (Part 2).

In December 1958 after negotiations with the RSS and AILA the council accepted a donation of land from Tooth & Co. next to the Maltings for use as the Sydney-Canberra Memorial Driveway.

In 1953 a Government Grant of 960 pounds was made towards the establishment of a rest and recreation area on land facing the Hume Hwy, which is Winifred West Park, named after the lady who founded Frensham. In December 1954 the park was opened and is a popular place to stop.

In 1934 construction of a sewage system was favourably considered with an application being made to the Public Works Department for a survey. A public meeting decided in favour of the proposal. In August 1937 tenders were called with the job expecting to cost £40,000. The job began in early 1938 and was finished in 1939.

Nattai Shire

On the 14th of June 1906 temporary Shire Council for the Nattai Shire was appointed and its first meeting took place at the Mittagong Town Hall. Council members were Messers HM Oxley, M Butler, G Horton, WF Brenning and RL MacKenzie. The chairman was HM Oxley and it was decided that meetings would be held in Bowral on alternate Thursdays. The police collected the rolls.

In November 1906 the Shire Council held its first elections at Bowral with the following being elected: A Riding, G Kell, CH Halstead, C Riding, W Kirkland, A Knox, B Riding, A Batt and WW Loesby. CH Halstead was elected the president and the first meeting was held in December 1906. Bowral was made the headquarters for Council with the temporary Shire Clerk being HO Rotton who was paid £2/10/- per week.

Shire and Municipality Amalgamation

In 1921 it was suggested to amalgamate the municipal councils and shires but the Nattai Shire and Moss Vale Council turned down the proposal. Then the idea was put forward to amalgamate Bowral, Mittagong and part of the Nattai Shire but the Shire Council refused to discuss the idea. In 1934 the Minister for Local Government received a petition from residents favouring the union but Mittagong Council when asked for its opinion was not in favour. In July 1938 an inquiry regarding the amalgamation was held and Mittagong Council registered their opposition but on the 1st of January 1939 the municipality and shire amalgamated. The new Shire consisted of 8 members, four ridings each electing two Councillors. In March 1949 the Nattai Shire changed its name to Mittagong Shire.

Burradoo was added to the Municipality of Bowral in 1953, which became effective as of the 1st of January 1954. This addition increased the Bowral Municipality to an area of 4150 acres with a population of 750.
