Mittagong History Newspapers
The history of local newspapers in Mittagong.
The Mittagong Mail was the first newspaper published in Mittagong on the 9th September 1883. Its name later changed to the Southern Mail after JC Murphy bought the business. The Mittagong Express began in 1887 with the name of this newspaper used until 1923 when the Southern Mail, Robertson Advocate, Moss Vale Record and Mittagong Express were registered as the Four Mails when Hector Lamond acquired ownership.
In the early 1900's the Mittagong Free Press was published but became extinct in late 1902.
In 1893 the Berrima District Leader began publication in Mittagong and was said to be the only newspaper printed in Mittagong. EJ Morcom took over the Leader in 1901 and a new journal called the Mittagong Argus began. The Mittagong Argus began on the 23rd of November 1901 but stopped publication later.
On the 17th of March 1922 CL Hill and Sons began the Mittagong Star. In August 1960 it was sold to the Southern Highland News and stopped publication two months later. The paper was handset and was most likely the only paper in this way during this time. The paper lasted 38 years and was one penny per copy.
