Mittagong History Sport
The sporting history of Mittagong.
A cricket match played on Anniversary Day in 1866 was the first record of a sporting event, which was between the New Sheffield Club and Mittagong.
Mittagong Race Club was formed in 1888. In March 1891 the meeting for the Mittagong Jockey Club was held on the "Sandy Flat" course between Berrima and Mittagong on the South Rd. In 1917 Mittagong Race and Sports Club were formed. The Mittagong and Southern Highlands Trotting Club were established with a track being laid out on the Sports Ground the following year. On the 24th of May 1947 the initial meeting of the club was held.
A soccer team called the Waratahs was formed in May 1898 and the Mittagong Bicycle Club ran a sports meet in November 1903.
It was decided to form the Mittagong Bowling Club at a meeting in March 1918. After this there was a membership consisting of 63 people. The original green was formed and opened for play in early 1936.
In June 1922 steps were taken to have a golf links laid out with an alderman inspecting the area that was proposed to use and it was decided to seek an expert opinion as to the most suitable position. A club was formed in 1923 after the players held a meeting and play began on the 27th of October. In 1925 the Mittagong Golf Club was established to play on the municipal links which council spent 1500 pounds on. On the 3rd of October 1926 the course was opened. The clubhouse was opened on the Municipal links in June 1928. In late 1932 golf was played else where after the club ceased to use the existing course. In 1933 it was decided to use W Cupitts farm to establish a new golf links course. In January 1933 the Mittagong Municipal Golf Club was formed. The two clubs united in 1939. On the 22nd of April 1950 a new clubhouse was opened that was built on voluntary labour.
